{"id":576,"date":"2026-03-24T15:33:49","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T14:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/comptronic.se\/?p=576"},"modified":"2026-04-22T13:15:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T12:15:18","slug":"spole-induktor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comptronic.se\/en\/spole-induktor\/","title":{"rendered":"Plant transformer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2016, Comptronic AB has represented the Italian manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/comptronic.se\/en\/tillverkare\/#sirio\">Sirio Inductive Components<\/a> on the Swedish market. Sirio has automated production in northern Italy and complementary manufacturing in India. The company specialises in inductive components and has been developing custom transformers and coils for power classes up to 25 kW for over 25 years. Among its customers are several leading Swedish industrial companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After almost ten years of close collaboration, Comptronic is now delighted to highlight Sirio's breakthrough in planar transformers within the 5\u201325 kW power range. With a design that combines high power density with isolation over 4 kV, Sirio opens up entirely new areas of application within Swedish industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efficient power converters with high power density are crucial in a range of industries today \u2013 from telecoms and data centres to the automotive industry and advanced power electronics. To deliver more power in a smaller space, switched-mode power converters are used almost exclusively. These comprise semiconductor components, inductive components, and capacitors, where each part must be optimised for the best efficiency and the smallest possible size. Inductive components in particular, meaning coils and transformers, often present the greatest challenge when it comes to achieving high power density.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The size of an inductive component is closely linked to the energy stored per switching cycle. To reduce size, a higher switching frequency is therefore required. Historically, switched converters have operated at frequencies around 20\u2013100 kHz, but with wide bandgap semiconductors such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), it has become possible over the past decade to reach 100\u2013500 kHz and in some cases over 1 MHz. This has paved the way for new designs of inductive components that are both more compact, better suited for high power densities, and at the same time more energy-efficient \u2013 something that directly contributes to lower energy consumption and reduced environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inductive components are generally divided into two main types: wire-wound and planar. Wire-wound components are based on round copper wires or litz wire. They are robust, flexible, and can handle high currents, but can become bulky and, with some manufacturers, technical performance can vary between different production batches. Planar inductive components, on the other hand, are based on copper foils or conductor paths on PCBs and lead frames. They are characterised by a low profile, good repeatability in production, and efficient cooling thanks to a large contact surface with surrounding materials. They also provide consistent quality and resource-efficient manufacturing, but are limited by higher parasitic capacitances and lower current capacity than traditional windings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planar transformers have long been common within the low to medium power range, often up to 200\u2013300 W, in high-frequency applications such as power supplies, chargers, and telecommunications equipment. The advantages are clear: low profile, simple cooling, modularity, and repeatable manufacturing. In recent years, the technology has taken a significant leap forward, and planar transformers are now commercially available even in the 5\u201325 kW power range. This marks a breakthrough for planar technology in the high-power segment and enables more compact, energy-efficient systems that reduce losses and, consequently, also a carbon footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development has been driven by several technological advancements. New ferrite materials with lower losses at high frequencies have improved core performance, while copper structures have been developed with thicker PCB layers, pressed copper frames, and advanced leadframe solutions capable of handling significantly higher currents. Winding topologies have been refined with interleaving and parallel connection of conductive traces, reducing resistive losses and mitigating leakage inductance. The result is flat transformers that combine high-frequency operation with high power levels, while also providing good thermal performance thanks to the natural contact surface with heat sinks and thermally conductive PCB structures. This leads to higher efficiency and lower wasted energy \u2013 important factors for more sustainable energy use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A particular challenge for planar transformers is high-voltage applications, for example, 800 V chargers for electric vehicles, solar inverters, and power supplies with insulation requirements exceeding 2 kV. In planar designs, the distances between windings are small, and the insulation layers are thinner than in traditional wound transformers, making it more demanding to achieve adequate creepage distances and air gaps. Additionally, the large copper surfaces can increase parasitic capacitance. These challenges can be overcome through solutions such as extra dielectric films, laminated or moulded insulation barriers, and hybrid designs combining planar and wound technology. Sirio Inductive Components has demonstrated that it is possible to achieve insulation above 4 kV in commercial planar transformers \u2013 a level that meets current safety standards such as IEC 62368 and IEC 61558, and which opens up safe and reliable solutions even in demanding high-voltage applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary, the planar transformer is no longer a technology limited to small, low-power power supplies. Thanks to new materials, improved designs, and advanced cooling methods, it is now commercially available in the 5 to 25 kW power range from manufacturers such as Sirio Inductive Components. The technology makes it possible to build power systems that are not only compact and reliable with insulation over 4 kV, but also more energy-efficient \u2013 and thus modern planar transformers contribute directly to reduced energy consumption and less environmental impact.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sedan 2016 representerar Comptronic AB den italienska tillverkaren Sirio Inductive Components p\u00e5 den svenska marknaden.
